I don't know about you, but as much as I love exciting nights out and getting the glad-rags on as a way to relax and unwind, my idea of the perfect night off these days more likely involves a delicious plate of food, a special drink and hunkering at home, maybe watching the latest juicy series on TV.
That's why I was so excited to discover Kurami, who make the most delicious, but also nutritious meals and deliver them directly to your door. So with minimal fuss, planning and washing up, you can get straight to enjoying a sumptuous meal, that's actually good for you too (all their meals are nutritionist approved and chef crafted).
I caught up with founder Camilla Pigozzi Garofalo to learn more about why she started Kurami and about their journey to date. Read below to find out more and get an exclusive discount off your first Kurami purchase.
Have you always been interested in health & wellbeing?
I have always had a passion for food. In the last few years, I have become increasingly interested in the relationship between our wellbeing and food. Exploring the ways in which balanced eating can transform our mood, positivity and mindfulness has been a true revelation!
What inspired you to found Kurami?
I was inspired to found Kurami because of my appreciation and love of food, and a desire to help clients navigate the ever evolving, trend-led nutrition world. I love re-developing well loved recipes, so that clients can incorporate them as part of a balanced lifestyle. Recipe development guided by reliable nutrition research, and a desire to be transparent with our clients are at the heart of what we do.
In your opinion, how much does nutrition play a role in overall health and wellbeing?
I think food in general plays a huge role in our lives. However, I always encourage clients to view food as more than simply “nutrition”. Wellbeing is also about the way we eat, and how we perceive what we are eating. There is a need to satisfy both the mind and the body. Seeing food as nourishment, rather than solely numbers gives an almost ritualistic quality to the meal that can be incredibly grounding.
Why did you focus on creating meals that focused on supporting great gut health?
As we are always mindful that we need to rely on sound nutrition knowledge, we believe it is tantamount to keep up with scientific developments. More and more research points to the importance of gut health on overall wellbeing. Gut health is the building block for all other aspects of wellbeing. That is why we are very excited about including over 30+ plant diversity points in our full box options, and releasing our free to download Rainbow Checklist Guide. Consuming 30+ types of different plants per week helps to favour a more diverse gut microbiome. This is essential for the normal functioning of our digestive system, maintenance of immune function, healthy skin, and other aspects of physical and mental wellbeing.
What have been the biggest highs and lows of your entrepreneurship journey to date?
Biggest highs are achieving goals, helping our clients achieve wellbeing, and building a strong team with a genuine passion for what we are doing. Biggest lows are the difficulties that we have faced in these past few years to ensure continuity of service, and reaching clients at the heart of the Covid-19 pandemic (we never shut down!).
What advice would you give to someone thinking about starting their own health/wellness business?
Focus on finding a niche that you believe in. Be relentless about maintaining quality, and always keep studying, reading, and learning to improve your skills! Connect with like minded individuals, and sign up for online communities and groups to stay up to date with what is happening in your field.
How do you source inspiration for your recipes?
I am deeply inspired by my travels around the world, and living in London! The food landscape in London is absolutely incredible, and so diverse. In one single day, you can have four different types of cuisine!
What is your favourite Kurami meal?
I love our tagine: it was one of the first meals we developed. It is so rich and heartwarming.
What is your desert island meal (the last meal you would eat before being sent to a desert island)?
Our decadent chocolate truffles. Made with top quality, low sugar chocolate, they melt in your mouth and are truly satisfying!
In addition to eating a healthy diet, what wellness rituals do you practice?
I try to put aside a couple of hours each week to focus on cooking and recipe development. I also have a pretty consistent fitness schedule, and workout three times weekly. I hardly do cardio, and instead focus on strength training.
What is your favourite time and place to sip on a glass of Mother Root Ginger Switchel?
